Sand Hollow State Park near Hurricane, Utah, surrounds UTV riders with a unique mash-up of red sand dunes, technical sandstone, and sweeping desert views. The blue waters of Sand Hollow Reservoir create a striking contrast against the orange and red landscape, while higher overlooks reveal the Hurricane Cliffs and distant Pine Valley Mountains. With access to the adjoining Sand Mountain OHV Area, riders can experience open dunes, rocky ridgelines, and technical desert trails in a single outing.
For newer UTV drivers, gentler sand routes and smaller dunes offer an approachable introduction to the area, with opportunities to explore at a comfortable pace and stop at scenic overlooks. Intermediate riding adds steeper dune climbs, greater elevation changes, and sections that transition between loose sand and exposed sandstone. These surfaces challenge drivers to adapt their steering, throttle control, and route selection throughout the ride. Difficulty varies considerably across the dunes, where a gradual slope can lead toward a steep face or a crest that hides the terrain beyond it. Riding with someone who understands the importance of tire pressure (and who brings a portable compressor) is crucial to having a fun and safe time.
For experienced off-roaders, Sand Hollow’s technical rock crawling delivers a much greater challenge. Steep sandstone climbs, rock ledges, narrow passages, and off-camber sections demand precise tire placement and an understanding of the UTV’s clearance and stability. Advanced routes such as Double Sammy introduce demanding climbs and technical descents, while the area’s most extreme obstacles test highly skilled drivers and specially prepared vehicles. This range of difficulty allows riders to choose between a scenic desert outing and a demanding crawl through rugged sandstone, all against Southern Utah’s distinctive red rock backdrop. Add this amazing location to your bucket list.
